2022 INTERNSHIP UX/UI SERVICE DESIGNBRIEF
Kraad is an Estonian startup specializing in smart thermostats. My goal was to create and test the initial version of the device management panel and handle additional tasks, such as designing business cards.
My first steps as an independent designer.
THE PROCESS During my three-month internship at Kraad, a startup specializing in smart thermostats for both personal and business use, I had the opportunity to delve into the world of UX/UI and service design. The startup consisted of a dynamic team of 11 professionals, including designers, developers, a machine learning expert, salespeople, and a dedicated founder. My primary role during this internship was to design the initial MVP view of the web panel used to control the thermostats remotely.
Additionally, I collaborated with the other designer on crafting the CVI and built a design system tailored to our product. This comprehensive approach ensured that our product had a cohesive and user-friendly interface.
CREATING A DESIGN SYSTEM FROM SCRATCH
Working remotely from home presented a valuable learning experience, emphasizing the importance of independent work and self-management. I created my project plan and honed my time management skills, utilizing tools like Toggl to track my hours and assess task efficiency.
Research played a crucial role in my internship.
I conducted interviews with hotel administrators to gain insights into their workflow since hotels were one of our target customer segments. Additionally, I performed competitor benchmarking to understand the strengths and weaknesses of similar devices on the market, helping us refine our product strategy.
One of the notable contributions during my internship was conducting a workshop for the entire team.
This workshop aimed to align everyone on our mission, clarify our processes and values, define our design language and communication style, and analyze our main competitors. We also established a step-by-step plan, from the initial sales call to ensuring regular product usage by the end user. This exercise fostered a deeper understanding of our customer journey and allowed us to identify areas for improvement to enhance user comfort.
Feelings before the workshop...
... and after!
RESULTS As my internship drew to a close, I handed over the MVP,
bridging the gap between design and development. This experience also taught me about the specific requirements for printing files versus digital assets and introduced me to the collaborative process with developers. Areas where I recognized the need for improvement included testing methodologies, collaboration with developers, and file organization.
In summary, my internship at Kraad provided me with a well-rounded experience in UX/UI and service design. I had the chance to contribute to the creation of a meaningful product while developing critical skills in research, project management, and collaboration with cross-functional teams. It was a valuable stepping stone in my journey toward becoming a proficient designer.
